School Assemblies
Inspiring the Next Generation to Dream Big
Every child deserves to know what it feels like to achieve something extraordinary. My school assemblies are designed to ignite that spark, using the gripping, real-world stories of elite marathon swimming to teach students about resilience, goal setting, and the power of a mindset that refuses to quit. I bring the deep water into the school hall, showing young people that the biggest obstacles in life are rarely physical, but psychological. By sharing the raw realities of facing freezing seas, jellyfish swarms, sharks and total exhaustion, I give students a practical roadmap for overcoming fear and bouncing back from failure in their own lives.
What the Students and Teachers Will Experience
This is not a dry presentation about swimming statistics. It is a high-energy, interactive storytelling experience that aligns perfectly with school values and personal development goals.
The Reality of Extreme Endurance: I bring along my actual marathon swimming gear, including my channel caps, goggles, and the essential recovery items, letting students visually connect with the physical demands of the sport.
The Anatomy of a Dream: From standing on Dover beach as a teenager to circling Manhattan Island in the dark, I map out exactly how a massive, seemingly impossible vision is broken down into small, daily habits.
Overcoming the Sting of Failure: I talk openly about my 2014 North Channel attempt where I was pulled from the water paralysed by jellyfish stings, teaching students that failure is not a dead end, but a necessary step on the road to success.
Key Takeaways for Your Assembly
The session is tailored to be highly memorable, leaving schools with a shared language of resilience that teachers can reference in the classroom for months to come.
Failing Forward: Transforming mistakes and setbacks into the fuel required for eventual victory.
The 99 Percent Rule: Understanding that when your body wants to stop, your mind is the ultimate deciding factor.
Finding Your Element: Encouraging every child to discover their own unique passion and dedicate themselves to mastering it.
Talks to schools are FREE of charge and we only ask that in return schools send a leaflet home with each child about Elite Swimming Academy swimming lessons or alternatively an email to parents with a link to the ESA website.
“We all found your Channel Swim talk hugely inspiring – what a goal and what an achievement! It was a wonderful coincidence you chose to tell the girls that the purpose of talking to them was to work towards their goal/dream, given that we are currently thinking about how to nurture the learning characteristic of ‘direction’. The video footage of your swim is really powerful but having you there to introduce it and then to answer questions made it unforgettable. My colleagues and I were particularly struck by your professional handling of the girls’ questions – thank you.”

“Ed is a very inspirational and motivating speaker and the children were spellbound when he talked about his dream at primary school to swim the English Channel. The assembly was delivered in a very professional manner with excellent timing and pace. The children listened attentively throughout the entire assembly.”

“Ed’s message of not giving up even when times get hard is a possible prize giving speech! I thought he was very good. Personable, keen and with an easy to grasp message which really inspired the children.”

“Ed’s account of his cross channel swim both fascinated and inspired the children at Newnham Croft Primary school. The children asked lots of interesting questions and one year 5 girl said it was the most inspiring thing she had ever heard! Ed’s message of work hard and you can achieve your goals reinforced our school ethos.”
